By Missy Robertson, Publisher, Macaroni KID Monroe-West Monroe April 23, 2025

There’s no better time to unplug, lace up those sneakers, and head outdoors as a family! At the Children’s Coalition for Northeast Louisiana, we’re all about encouraging healthy habits that bring families closer—and we’ve got just the spot to get you started: Highland Park Wetland Trails. With beautiful walking paths and free outdoor exercise equipment, it’s the perfect place to get moving while soaking in the natural beauty of our community.

And while you’re embracing the great outdoors, we’d love for you to discover another gem close to our hearts—the Origin Bank Family Garden. This vibrant, hands-on community space features 32 raised beds in a demonstration garden, offering families a fun and educational way to learn about growing fresh food, healthy living, and sustainability. Throughout the year, Children's Coalition for Northeast Louisiana hosts events that invite kids and grown-ups alike to dig in, explore, and connect. NEXT UP: SUPER SATURDAY, MAY 3RD, 2025

As we mentioned, one of the standout features of Highland Park Wetland Trails is its state-of-the-art outdoor exercise equipment. Made possible through a grant from Living Well Foundation, these fitness stations are located along the walking trails and use body weight resistance to provide an effective workout. Whether a beginner or more advanced, these stations are easy to use and offer a great way to add variety to your routine.

Imagine taking a walk or bike ride with your family, pausing to try out the fitness stations along the way. Parents can lead by example, showing kids the importance of staying active, while children can join in and explore the equipment in a fun, interactive way. It’s an opportunity to create lasting memories while promoting healthy habits for everyone.

Best of all, Highland Park Wetland Trails is completely free to access. With no costs to worry about, families can enjoy regular visits without stretching their budget. It’s proof that staying healthy and connected doesn’t have to come with a price tag.

Other amenities include a bathroom, bike repair station, (2) covered accessible picnic tables, and lots of beautiful wildlife to see! Leashed pets are also welcome at the park, and pet owners are asked to clean up after their dogs to help maintain a pleasant environment for all visitors.
